Denni Ian
New single "In Time We Are All Breaking Down" out 6 November via Celebration Records
Danish songwriter and author Denni Ian returns with "In Time We Are All Breaking Down", his first new music since the 2023 album Salt King. The single is the opening chapter of his new album, Will It Become Sky, Pt. I.
Since Salt King, Ian has found his way back to both songs and literature, building the body of work that became Will It Become Sky. His music still lives at a troubadour’s crossroads between lo-fi folk and art rock, classic songwriting and post-punk unease, with lyrics that shift from direct confession to images that resist a single reading. Across the new work, an unguarded romance set against apocalyptic weather remains the signature engine of Ian’s songwriting.
Will It Become Sky grew out of physical and mental exhaustion. A few years ago, Ian was in a traffic accident that nearly cost him an eye and left him with a concussion so severe that he was bedridden for months. “I had trouble remembering things. For a while, I couldn’t play my instruments, could barely read, and struggled to spell. I was afraid that those fabrics of my life might be gone for good,” Ian says of the months he spent staring at the ceiling of his apartment. The sound of the new music was shaped by his slow recovery.
“In Time We Are All Breaking Down” pairs an insistent melody with intense guitar work, held in a mounting sense of impending collapse. Woven through it are the backing vocals of Freja Okking, who makes her recording debut here, her young voice answering Ian’s across the song.
